15 criteria Migration timing Cost & logistics

The biggest truth about safari

Property matters almost as much as the wildlife. A mediocre lodge in a great reserve can feel tiring. A beautiful lodge with fewer sightings can still feel magical. For first-timers, the sweet spot is usually 2–3 safari regions plus a beach ending such as Diani, Zanzibar or Seychelles.

What a safari is actually like

A safari is not a zoo experience. Set this expectation early — it changes how guests pack, plan and feel about their trip.
01

Key realities

Patience. Curiosity. Flexibility.

  • Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed
  • Roads inside parks are mostly unpaved, dusty tracks
  • Wake-ups are early — game drives start at sunrise
  • Nature decides everything; the day flows around it
  • You may see 20 lions before breakfast — or spend hours searching for one leopard
02

What guests get wrong

Set expectations or refund them later.

  • Expecting guaranteed sightings — manage this upfront
  • Packing too many clothes and the wrong colours
  • Forgetting the dust factor (clothes, cameras, lenses)
  • Assuming "luxury" = city-hotel luxury (it's not the same)
  • Booking too many park changes — packing fatigue is real
  • Underestimating drive times between parks
  • Expecting late mornings on a safari trip

A typical safari day

Build this rhythm into every Kenya/Tanzania itinerary you sell.

Daily rhythm

  • 5:30–6:00 AMWake up. Tea or coffee at camp.
  • 6:00–9:00 AMMorning game drive — best for predators.
  • 9:00 AMBreakfast, often back at camp or bush-style.
  • 10 AM–3 PMLunch & downtime. Pool, nap, photo edits.
  • 3:30–6:30 PMEvening game drive — golden hour for cats.
  • 7:30 PMDinner early. Bed by 9–10 PM is normal.

Vehicles, roads & dust

  • BestLand Cruiser with pop-up roof — premium, comfortable, ideal for photography.
  • CheaperMinivan — bumpier, less premium, fewer good angles.
  • PremiumOpen-sided 4×4 — only in private conservancies, unbeatable.
  • DustHeavy in dry season (Jun–Oct, Jan–Mar). Expect it on clothes, hair, lenses.
  • Roads5-hour drives feel long. Standing in the jeep is the norm.
Tip when pitching. Conservancies usually mean better vehicles, fewer cars at a sighting, off-road permission and walking safaris. They cost more — but the experience is dramatically different.

Lodges, camps & the stay experience

"The more luxurious the safari lodge, the more natural it often feels." Many first-timers don't expect this.
A

Luxury works differently here

No AC. No TV. Weak Wi-Fi. No fences around camp. And that's intentional.

  • Stunning views & massive suites or tents
  • Personal butler service at higher-end camps
  • Gourmet food, often surprisingly excellent
  • Sundowners in the bush at golden hour
  • Animals frequently nearby — even at night
B

Yes, insects and lizards happen

Common in rooms: geckos, beetles, moths, occasional ants. Camps provide mosquito nets, turndown spray, repellent.

  • Monkeys outside the tent (don't leave food out)
  • An elephant walking past your room is normal
  • Hippos near pathways at night → staff escort you
  • Mornings can be cold in Mara, Aberdare, Mt Kenya, Ngorongoro
  • Pack a light fleece, layers, neutral colours, sunglasses
C

Tents that aren't really tents

"Luxury tents" come with proper beds, attached bathrooms, hot showers, wooden floors and beautiful decor.

  • Proper king/queen bed with linens
  • En-suite bathroom & hot water
  • Wooden flooring & verandas with views
  • Verandah loungers, lanterns, real fireplaces
  • Wi-Fi may be lobby-only — manage expectations
D

Hidden costs & surprises

Always check inclusions. Many "all-inclusive" packages don't cover the things below.

  • Drinks at the bar (often only basic alcohol included)
  • Laundry service (often extra)
  • Conservancy fees per night (significant)
  • Tips for guides & camp staff
  • Hot-air balloon safari (a major add-on)
